One day, a long time ago, I thought to myself, “I bet I could use kefir in place of buttermilk for a healthier, homemade version of ranch dressing.” I immediately texted my daughter about the matter and she was like “Oh yes, do it, Mom. Go you. Rah rah.”
[She’s such an encourager and she never makes fun of my texts either.]
[She always makes fun of my texts.]
I had been buying organic ranch dressing from the grocery store for a while, but honestly, it is gross. And it still has “organic” canola oil in it, which…what is that anyway? Pretty sure I don’t want to eat that.
But dang, bottled dressing is so convenient. I know. I hear you.
And no one wants to live without ranch dressing in their life. I understand totally. It just goes with…everything.
Anyway, it went on my to do list, but it didn’t happen for a long time until a few weeks ago when I had a now or never moment about making a healthier ranch dressing for my loved ones. After a few batches, I feel like I nailed it.
I realize that this idea has been done (about 42 million times apparently) but I have tried some other homemade ranch dressings that just didn’t cut it in the taste department. And when I say cut it, what I really mean is that my 7 year old, ranch dressing-loving grand has to approve.
Well, he finally did on my version.
And, really, my biggest mental block was that it’s just not as convenient to make it from scratch as it is to buy it from the store, but honestly, you just put all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk. Done.
That is not hard.
Plus, what really made me put this recipe into action was the day I found the organic mayonnaise at the grocery store. That was a happy day. Because I have always had a lot of guilt from eating regular mayo.
Of course making your own mayo from scratch would be even better. But I am not there yet. I’m sure I will be one day, but that day is not today.
You may be bothered by full fat mayo, but I am not. All things in moderation to me.
Except ranch dressing. That is hard to keep in moderation. I press on, though….
Here are my notes:
–This really thickens in the fridge. It’s a thick dressing, but if it’s too thick for you, just thin out with extra kefir.
–I really like putting some fresh ingredients in mine, and for me that is chopped green onions and fresh parsley, because I can get those easily. Fresh dill would be awesome.
–I would think that if you wanted a thicker dip, you could reduce the kefir.
–I make a triple batch of this usually. We do a lot of ranch dressing.
–Using all organic ingredients will obviously make this healthier.
–The salt is really important.
- 1 cup kefir (organic if possible)
- ¾ cup organic mayonnaise
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
- ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon coarse pepper
- 2 teaspoons dried dill weed (can substitute 1 tablespoon fresh)
- 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes (can substitute 1 tablespoon fresh)
- 2 teaspoons dried chives (can substitute1 tablespoon fresh)
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped green onion, optional
- Whisk all ingredients together until smooth. Will thicken in fridge.
